Bav Babe 11:11

VEGASMAMA: Jet, Lily & Kim Bavington's 11:11

I'll never forget that red J.CREW wool poncho, it was scratchy, fringed and incredibly warm.  Winter gets cold here in Vegas.  I had pulled six-hours in the University's dark room, back in the day when you developed your own black&white images and filtration was done with lenses, time and cardboard cutouts.  I was exhausted. Ready to go home.  Then I walked past The Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery, the doors were open and the people were pouring into the small yet prolific space.  I walked in.  Neon, vertical stripes were on the wall.  I heard many people talk of musical notes & bars & spray and the painting of music.  It was a totally new experience.  Thrilling.  That's where I saw Tim & Kim Bavington (Crisostomo then) for the first time.  He was a tall Brit known as The Simpson's artist who looked way too urban cool for Vegas (eighteen years ago) and Kim bopped around, so full of energy she was as vibrant as those paintings...and those paintings were alive.  It was Tim Bavington's MFA Show at UNLV.  Circa 1999.  Nearly two decades have passed since then and, with a bit of life experience behind us all, that red poncho-ed undergrad is proud to present the radness that is the very memorable Kim Bavington...and her masterpieces, Jet & Lily Bavington!

Kidcentric 11

Vegas Living, hometown favorites enjoyed by Jet, Lily & Kim…

1.  OUTDOOR PARK?  Our backyard!

2.  INDOOR PLAY/JUMPHOUSE?  The twins love The Crystal Palace Roller Skating Rink because it's so '70's and "mom says it hasn't changed one bit in 40 years!"  They also dig Gravady, Lily loves the fabric swings & Jet loves jumping/flipping into the foam blocks.

3.  VEGAS STRIP OR DOWNTOWN DESTINATION?  Fashion Show Mall.  The Park in front of T-Mobile Arena, we love their brick & mortar shops, the water rock wall & the street musicians!

4.  WHEN-IT'S-HOT-OUTSIDE KIDS' DESTINATION?  Our backyard pool!  Lots of pool floats, a diving board, trampoline (in ground!), basketball court (it's blue!); lots of friends over!

5.  WHEN IT'S FREEZING OUTSIDE KIDS' DESTINATION?  Ice-skating on the lawn-turned-rink at Downtown Summerlin or Arcade Games at Dave & Buster's, also in Downtown Summerlin.

6. RESTAURANT WITH KIDS?  FAVORITE DISHES?  Spago's for kids' meals, pizza & chicken tenders in the café, kids can draw on the paper table cloths (VEGASMAMAS' TIP: look up, you'll see the huge painting by Lily & Jet's daddy, Tim Bavington); locally owned Mingo Kitchen & Lounge in The Art's District, their outdoor garden where kids can run around until the food arrives and parents can chat (VEGASMAMAS, this speaks to our soul, Vegas' own Secret Garden!); Sugar Factory, the bubbling, smokey blue drinks with gummy sharks and any place that lets you make your own pizzas.

7.  KIDS' SHOPS?  Gilt.com, Target and H&M and, for books, The Writer's Block on Fremont St.

8. GROCERY STORE?  "Target, because while we're there we try to talk mom into buying us a toy or at least letting us go to the "$1" rack!  We also love Trader's Joe's in Downtown Summerlin because they have the red kids' carts!"  -Lily & Jet Bavington

9.  SEASON IN VEGAS WITH KIDS & WHY?  WHERE DO YOU GO?  WHAT DO YOU DO?  "Summer, because there's no school, we can swim, have friends over, go to camps and on vacations!!!"  - Jet & Lily Bavington

10.  I'VE BEEN MEANING TO TAKE MY FAMILY HERE...VEGAS DESTINATION?  We have been to lots of concerts; The Beatles LOVEKA and JABBAWOCKEEZ but still want to see Blue Man Group.

11.  YOUR MUST-SEE VEGAS DESTINATION FOR VISITING LOVED ONES?  Daddy's sculpture Pipe Dream in Symphony Park at The Smith Center.  Seven Magic Mountains.

VEGASMAMAS 11

Vegas Living, Kim's adult MAMA favorites...

1.  CHARITY?  So many good ones in our community; Three Square, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, Communities in Schools, The Art Museum at Symphony Park.

2.  STAYCATION?  I once stayed a Thanksgiving weekend at The Cosmopolitan with my twins who were seven-years old at the time; they had created an ice-skating rink over the pool, we had a wonderful suite and the twins' favorite part was the room service!

3.  RESTAURANT?  WHAT DO YOU ORDER?  NOBU, Vegetable Teppanyaki & anything with Anticucho sauce!  I'm vegan and allergic to seafood but it's still my favorite place to eat!  My favorite restaurant with a view is Mon Ami Gabi in The Paris Hotel, sitting out on the sidewalk with Bellagio fountain view, I feel like I'm on vacation.

4.  EXERCISE SPOT?  FAV CLASS, INSTRUCTORS?  The Ride's "Cycle" with Devyn at 9:30am; Lifetime Summerlin's "Strike" with Ali, Thursdays at 9:10am.  Paul Rosenberg's "Foam Roller" class at his gym, Real Results Fitness, is awesome for the athlete who works out hard and need to make sure they're honoring that hard work by preventing injuries.  I go running (jogging) up LV Blvd between Convention Center Dr. and Tropicana, it's fantastic people watching and great to see The Strip as the tourists do.

5.  LIBATION & WHERE?  I'm not a big drinker but the most beautiful bar in town to me is FIZZ in Caesar's next to The Colosseum entrance, I usually have a glass of champagne there.

COFFEE / TEA DRINK & WHERE?  I like the hot Tea Service at Spago's, for cold tea Iced Lemon Lime Green Tea at our local shop PublicUS on Fremont & Maryland Pkwy, it's also got great people watching.

REFRESHING TREAT & WHERE?  It used to be Grass Roots smoothies downtown, but they recently closed and now I make smoothies at home (VEGASMAMAS Treat: peep below for Kim's smoothie recipe!)

6.  ART DESTINATION?  The Neon Museum, it's so unique to Vegas Visitors and so nostalgic to the natives.  (Also see KIDCENTRIC #11)

7.  SPA OR MANI/PEDI SPOT?  I don't have the time to go to a spa or nail salon and sit there for two hours every week and, for me, it's every week since not even a gel mani can stand up to the stuff I get my hands into!  (With decades of painting experience, it's no surprise this Bav Babe knocks out her own perfect polish, see the mango photo below!)  Going to the gym is really my relax time; Lifetime, The Ride & Private Pilates Reformer with Marcela (former lead dancer of Zumanity).

8.  VEGASMAMAS NIGHT OUT SPOT?  Dinner and a musical at The Smith Center or a live concert at one of the many concert venues we have to choose from (we're so spoiled with live music venues in Vegas).

9.  CHILL OUT SPOT?  Meditation class with Reed Cowan (yes, our favorite local News 3 Anchor!) at Lifetime Summerlin, Wednesdays at 10:20am or Sundays at 9:10am.

10.  MOVIE/SHOW/SONG ABOUT VEGAS?  Viva las Vegas with Elvis, Luck be a Lady by Sinatra, Martin Scorsese's Casino as it reminds me of being a teen growing up in Vegas and seeing that story unfold on the news and, later in life, having friends who were (in real life) either married to or children of the mobster characters portrayed in the movie.

11.  YOUR MUST-SEE VEGAS DESTINATION FOR ADULT-ONLY VISITORS?  The Peppermill Fireside Lounge, it's so 70's Vegas! (except they added tv screens), and for my 20-something friends, they must experience one of the many celebrity D.J. Mega nightclubs.

thank you, Kim, many of your picks are VEGASMAMAS' own!  oh, the first part of Casino with the glam, the sharkskin suits, the casino chips flying through the air and the rock-n-roll...magic.  and the round-lounge-seating-pit-around-fire+water at The Fireside Lounge is beyond Vegas cool (also featured in Casino, we need more pink in our lives!).  Thank you for allowing us into your own Vegas Bavington Family Magic.

Thank you to Lily & Jet Bavington, below, doing what they do so well; create, hug, surround themselves with beauty & run down their daddy's Pipe Dream.  To book classes for your child(ren), go to Kim's website www.artclassesforkids.com

Kim's Smoothie:

When you spend time with Kim, you'll find efficiency is a key component to her lifestyle.  Kim likes cold smoothies.  She doesn't like ice in her smoothies yet she likes to use fresh fruit and all organic ingredients.  What's the answer?  Kim makes two smoothies at-a-time in her Vitamix at night, pours them into her recycled cups, stores 'em in the fridgie then she's all set the next morning & afternoon.  On our day of shooting, Kim was out of peach & pomegranates so she substituted apples & strawberries.  She makes it work.  Yes, Kim, I like your style.

  • 1 banana
  • 1 peach
  • 1 mango
  • 1 spoonful of pomegranate seeds
  • 3 cups fresh kale
  • almond milk, unsweetened, vanilla, Trader Joe's
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil
  • Flaxseed Meal, Trader Joe's
  • Super Seed & Ancient Grain Blend, Trader Joe's
  • Sun Warrior Protein Powder, Vanilla, I purchase my protein powder at Real Results Fitness (Downtown on Commerce) where I work-out with Guru trainer & gym owner, Paul Rosenberg, he's the only trainer I know that can give me the mental lashing I need to continue to eat clean.

After I spent time with Kim, I reignited my love for smoothies.  Thank you, Bav Babe, I'm blending on with my healthy self.
